I am 25, past my test about 12 month ago and just recently bought my first car and i need to get some insurance started as of tomorrow.
I went to the Direct Line website for a quote.
For just me to be insured it was £900.
For me and my husband (who has been driving for over a decade with no claims or convictions etc) to both be insured on the same car it was £800.
I’m a bit confused why it cost so much less for two people to be insured instead of just one.
Does it sound right to you or is the £800 quote supposed to be per person?
Thanks

The cost will be less for the 2 of you because (I’m guessing) your husband has held his license longer.
Try playing around with it, putting him as the main driver and you as a named driver and then vice versa. You may be able to get it even cheaper!
Sounds about right. You husband is less of a risk and on the basis that he will use the car some of the time the overall risk is less. You however are an unknown quantity and so the main part of the cost is you. After a year or so of claim free motoring you will find that the costs drop significantly.
They also drop when you reach 30 and other milestone birthdays.
If it’s any consolation, a bloke in the same position would probably be quoted about 20-30% more.
If i were you i’d try a comparison website and get many quotes and see the difference i am currently learning to drive and my partner has held a full licence for 25yrs and last year he put me on his insurance as a named driver at a cost of £182.00 fully comp it will certainly be cheaper to do it that way round but on the other hand if you don’t have insurance in your name your quotes will always be high but like 1 answer has said have a play around getting quotes for you as main driver, adding your partner and also with you as a named driver it really depends on how much you can afford as for a new driver insurance is always going to be expensive
With your husband’s driving experience the risk is reduced, hence cheaper. For heavens sake don’t take Sophie’s advice (sorry Sophie), by naming your husband as Main Driver if you are going to be the principle user. You will could invalidate your insurance if you have a wreck.
It is an oddity but in fact quite normal
Quite possible.
A few years ago my mum saved about £100 by adding me as a named driver, even though I only drive her car 2 or 3 times a year when I visit, and at the time I’d had more accidents in the previous 5 years than she’d had in about 40 years of driving.
