What level of car insurance should I get?

get car insurance quote
Steve asked:

The difference in my car insurance quote from the bare minimum ($356.50) to second or third in each category ($1,422.90) is over a thousand dollars. This is for a 6-month quote.

I’m a very safe driver and have never been in an accident that is my fault. Someone rear-ended me once but there was only damage to his car.

Should I risk going with bare minimum coverage? What do other people out there do? What level of insurance do you guys have?

Well… I just have PLPD (the minimum). If you have a decent car & a good driving record, that’s really all you need (unless you drive a REALLY fancy/expensive car).

I haven’t had insurance in 4 years!! It’s a ripoff, you pay basically for NOTHING! If you do use it, your premium is gonna go up, and you STILL have to pay a deductable and if it’s your fault they can drop you all together. I don’t care if it is the law, im not gonna get it until i pay my vehicle off, and even then it will be the bare minimum.

the guy with no insurance is why you are paying such high rates. By the way, its not how you drive its ho w the otehr person drives, The insurance covers much of your medical bills if you should get hurt, car insrance isnt just about fixing your car. If your car is old and damaged past its blue book value, they will “total” it and only give you that much and therefore you are out of a car and with les money to replace it, the ghigher insurance helps u ge t the car replace and may pay for lost wages if you are injured. Pick middle of the road coverage.

My husband and I have the bare minimum that the law allows and what we can afford on the deductible is $500.00 in case of damage to either of our cars…
We also have the minimum coverage if someone is hurt…

Liability insurance protects you from damage claims from others. The amount of coverage you need has nothing to do with how good a driver you are. You want to protect any other assets you may have, which could be lost if you are found at fault in an accident.

The damages from one accident could easily ruin you financially. Depending on who or what is involved, there can be claims from many people for medical bills, lost wages and damaged property.

If you were to have a tire blow out, or your brakes fail, and you were to run into a bus full of people, you would be liable for the medical costs of each and every person on the bus. Your insurance will pay up to policy limits, and you are personally liable for the rest. You wages could be garnisheed, or you may be forced into bankruptcy, and have most of your assets sold to pay the costs.

It is your choice. I recommend getting as much coverage as you could possibly afford. Personally, I have a several million dollar umbrella liability policy, on top of my high coverage auto insurance. The peace of mind it worth it.
